Enhancing Maritime Safety Around Mahé: Installation of New Demarcation Buoys

The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA) has successfully completed the installation of new demarcation buoys around the island of Mahé, marking a significant step toward enhancing safety for navigation and the general public.

This initiative is part of SMSA’s ongoing efforts to promote safe and responsible use of Seychelles’ waters by clearly defining maritime zones and reducing the risk of accidents

Clear Zoning for Safer Waters

The newly installed buoys are strategically positioned and color-coded to indicate their specific functions:

  • Yellow and pink buoys mark designated swimming areas, allowing bathers to enjoy the ocean safely away from vessel traffic.
  • Green and red buoys demarcate navigation channels, guiding vessels entering and exiting various areas with greater accuracy and safety.

These markers play a vital role in minimizing conflicts between swimmers and marine traffic while ensuring smooth vessel movement in busy or restricted waterways.

Commitment to International Safety Standards

SMSA’s buoyage system follows international best practices, designed to prevent collisions and groundings and to support safe maritime navigation throughout Seychelles’ territorial waters. This initiative reflects SMSA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, organized, and environmentally responsible maritime operations.

The SMSA encourages all mariners and members of the public to familiarize themselves with the new buoyage system. Understanding these markers helps ensure compliance and contributes to a safer and more enjoyable marine environment for everyone.
