The BBNJ Agreement, commonly referred to as the ‘High Seas Treaty’, is an international accord established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Its primary objective is to tackle the increasing concerns regarding the sustainable protection of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
The signing and subsequent ratification of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty represent a pivotal advancement for Seychelles in the stewardship of its oceanic territories and resources. As Seychelles prepares for the implementation and integration of the treaty, it is crucial to involve local stakeholders in discussions about the importance and ramifications of this agreement. In this regard, the Department of Blue Economy, in partnership with various organizations and stakeholders, has organized a comprehensive three-day BBNJ Familiarisation Workshop from September 30 to October 2, 2024.
Recognizing the vital role of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority in the protection and conservation of the marine environment, our Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Andy Gobine, is actively participating in the workshop alongside other stakeholders, including representatives from the Seychelles National Marine Park Authority and the Ministry of Environment.
