Overview of the Workshop
The workshop on the regional implementation of the 2023 International Maritime Organization (IMO) Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy and the green transition of shipping in Africa is being held from February 6 to 7, 2025, in Mombasa, Kenya.
This event is organized by the IMO in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, and in partnership with the Danish Maritime Authority. The primary goal of this workshop is to provide a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences and discuss challenges and opportunities related to maritime decarbonization in Africa.
Seychelles is represented by Mr. Andy Gobine, the Deputy CEO of SMSA, along with Ms. Rajelle Barbe, Seychelles Port Authority Manager for Environment, Social Impact, and Safety.
Objectives of the Workshop
The workshop aims to develop an African maritime decarbonization needs assessment and action plan. Key topics include:
IMO’s Climate Action: Discussion on how international shipping can align with global climate goals.
Recent Studies: Examination of studies that analyze the effects of climate measures on African shipping.
Energy-Efficient Technologies:Exploration of technologies that enhance energy efficiency for ports and ships.
Electrification Initiatives: Focus on electrifying ferries as part of a broader strategy for sustainable shipping.
National Action Plans (NAPs):Development of long-term energy transition plans tailored for individual nations.
Key Themes Discussed
Operationalizing AAMA Resolutions: Participants will discuss next steps in implementing relevant resolutions from the African Maritime Agenda (AAMA) concerning GHG emissions reduction.
State-of-Play in Shipping: An update on current trends, projections in maritime trade, and port operations within Africa will be provided.
Sustainable Shipping Governance:The workshop will address governance structures necessary for promoting sustainable practices within the maritime sector.
Infrastructure Development: There will be discussions focused on developing shipping and port infrastructure that supports sustainability goals.
Interactive Sessions: Break-out sessions will facilitate dialogue around partnerships, policy development needs, finance access, private sector perspectives, job creation, and training skills.
Wrap-Up Session: The final session will summarize preliminary outcomes, recommendations for regional follow-up actions, and national strategies moving forward.
